Princess Christian Care Home celebrates Iranian New Year

Last week, we celebrated Iranian New Year (‘Nowruz’) along with our residents at Princess Christian Care Home.

We have three residents who celebrate this each year and to mark the occasion we had decorations and a Haft-Sin table in our reception which had an arrangement of symbolic items on it.

Traditionally, the seven items of Haft-Sin are:

  1. Sabzeh (wheat, barley, lentil or grass sprouts): rebirth and growth
  2. Samanu (sweet wheat pudding): sweetness and fertility
  3. Senjed (dried oleaster fruit): love
  4. Seer (garlic): health and medicine
  5. Seeb (apple): beauty
  6. Somagh (sumac): the sunrise and new beginnings
  7. Serkeh (vinegar): age and patience

The Haft-Sin table may also contain other items of significance to each family, for example books of poetry, goldfish, painted eggs, candles and mirrors.

Our residents enjoyed learning about this different culture and also took part in some Iranian food tasting – with fish, rice and vegetables on the menu.
